Healthy Workplace at CII NR Headquarters, Chandigarh on 30th
Sept 2008
A stakeholder workshop on
Healthy Workplaces was organized by School of Public Health, PGIMER
Chandigarh in Collaboration of Confederation of Indian Industry under Govt
of India- WHO collaborative Program at CII headquarters at Sector 31
Chandigarh, today.
A healthy workplace
assumes more relevance in today’s scenario where we have a booming economy
and youngsters are spending more hours at their workplaces than at home,
the overgrowing competition is continuously adding to the stress level and
lifestyle lead non communicable diseases. Hence a strategic focus on a
healthy workplace would be the need of the hour and an alternative to keep
the productive assets i.e. industry workforce at the same pace.
School of Public Health ,PGIMER
is developing a Healthy Workplaces model in Chandigarh specific to Indian
context and 3 industries in the region are participating.Today’s workshop
brought all the stake holders i.e Industry, Health Sector, Government,
Academia and Media of coming together for a strategic and focused
intervention for current and future prospects of healthy and productive
workforce.The workshop also observed a very comprehensive exhibition
showcasing IEC material based on Non Communicable diseases and was
inaugurated by Dr Manjit Singh Bains, Director Health Services, Chandigarh
Administration.

Convener – CSR Panel, CII Chandigarh Council. Prof. Rajesh Kumar, Head,
School of Public Health, PGIMER welcomed the gathering.
Dr J. S Thakur, Associate
Professer, School of Public Health, PGIMER explained the PGI initiative on
healthy Workplaces for NCD Control and key issues. Then Dr Manjit Singh
Bains highlighted the NCD Control initiative in Chandigarh. The Inaugural
address was delivered by Prof K.K.Talwar, Director, PGIMER. He said the
public sector needs may be different than private sector. The other
dignitaries on the dias included Dr Ramnil Ahuja and Dr D. Bhattacharya,
CII; Dr. Prashant Assistant Director General, ICMR and Dr Sanjay wadhwa,
PGIMER.
The next session was a
technical session, which was moderated by Prof. Rajesh Kumar and Prof S K
Jaindal from PGIMER. The session included sharing of the experiences by
Lt. Col. MS Dhaliwal,and Mrs. Kanika who gave the implementation in their
respective Industries.
There was Group work which
was organized with the help of the resource persons in two groups. The
Discussion was on Workplace policies and programme, situational analysis,
Broad Action Plan and proposed model & scheme for developing healthy
workplaces.Later the recommendations of the group will be used to
replicate in other public private set ups. The model developed was refined
further in the group and will be implemented in three participating
industries till the final model is developed.
